The International violin makers competition
"Violin: Soul and Shape" 2019
I. Organizers:

II. The place and time of the event:
2.1 Competition is held on the 26-30th of November, 2019;

III Application procedure, registration fee, general conditions:
3.1 The Competition is open to professional violin makers without age restrictions;
3.2 The instruments and bows for participation in the competition have to be provided by the maker or the owner. The award of the competition goes to the maker. The award is transferred to the owner who provided the instrument / bow.
3.3. The application for participation in the competition, a copy of the registration fee payment must be sent before November 10, 2019 by E-mail: violin@soulandshape.ru
3.4 The registration fee is 100 euros (1-2 instruments/bows).
The registration fee is 150 euros (3 instruments/bows).
Registration fee is non-refundable.

3.6 The instruments/bows for participation should be delivered: 10 - 25 November 2019.
3.7 The instruments/bows can be delivered for the competition Organizing committee personaly or through authorized representative:

3.8. Instruments by Poste mail are NOT ACCEPTED.
3.9. One participant can provide no more than 2 instruments / bows in each nomination.
3.10 The instruments/bows are represented in competition in a cover or a case anonymously – without any label (or opaque paper sticks to the label).
The maker's motto, written on a card in Latin letters, should be attached to the instrument's head. In the event of several instruments are submitted to the Competition, the mottos should be different.
2 envelopes are put in a case:
The first envelope is sealed. Outside, only the nomination and the motto of the instrument are written. Inside the envelope, data about the master:
a) surname, name and address of the maker;
b) place and year when the instrument is made;
c) 3 original labels;
d) short autobiography;
e) 2 photos, size 10x15 cm, with the name of the contestant legibly written;
f) 2 photos of the instrument, size 10x15 cm., one viewing the face of the instrument, the other – the profile of its head.
The second envelope is not sealed. Outside, the same nomination and motto of the instrument should be written. Inside the envelope:
a) a power of attorney for minor repairs, in case of damage to the instrument during transportation, signed by the sender (repairs are carried out by a maker who does not participate in the competition);
b) a spare chord of strings.
The place of the sound-post should be marked in pencil in bottom deck. In the case of its offset during transportation, an authorized maker is able to place it.
3.11. After the end of the competition, an Exhibition of instruments that participated in the II and III rounds will be held, indicating the name and country of the master.
The exhibition will last 2 days (November 29 and 30). No fee is paid for participation in the exhibition. After the end of the exhibition, instruments and bows are returned to the owners.
3.12 The instruments/bows which are exhibited in competition, can't be returned before the end of competition and an exhibition.
3.13. Participants insure their instruments for the duration of the Competition at their own expense.
The responsibility of the delivery of instruments and their collection upon the completion of the Competition rests with the submitters.
3.14 The organizing committee of competition reserves the right to photograph the instruments/bows exhibited in competition and to distribute pictures without any payments to their owners.
3.15 The cases of controversies during the Competition will be settled by the legal authorities of the country – Competition organizer.
3.16. Only Russian language will be considered as valid one.

5.1. The year of making of the instruments (violin, viola, cello) - without restriction.
5.2. Allowed the participation of instruments imitating old violins, violas, cello.
5.3. Instrument size (violin, viola, cello) - 4/4
Notes:
a) The body length of viola should not be less than 410 mm and no more than 420 mm;
Restrictions for the instruments:
а) not handmade;
б) with extravagant form, color and ornaments;
c) that are not made of wood;
d) that are made by Jury-members or by their relatives;
e) that have been awarded prizes at any other competitions
VI. Nomination condition Bow:
6.1. The year of making of the instruments (violin, viola, cello, bow) - without restriction.
6.2. Don’t Allowed the participation of bows imitating old bow (baroque bows are not involved).
Notes:
a) Bows should be 4/4, made of Brazil-wood, the nut should be made of ebony with silver fittings. The plate on the stick head should be made of natural bone. The stick winding should be traditional. The horsehair color should be white.

а) not handmade;
б) with extravagant form, color and ornaments;
c) that are not made of wood;
d) baroque bows;
e) that are made by Jury-members or by their relatives;
f) that have been awarded prizes at any other competitions
VII. Terms of the competition “Violin master”

7.1. A form, a material, coloring – without restrictions
7.2. The instruments/bows allowed in this competition: violin, viola, violoncello, bow;
7.3. Year of making instruments – without restriction;
VIII. Jury:
8.1 Prominent violin makers and musicians — virtuosos will be invited to join the Jury. The Jury list will be announced prior to the Competition. The Jury Panel will give assessment for instruments in compliance with anonymity of violin makers.
8.2 The jury has the right: to award not all awards;
The jury's decision cannot be revised.
IX. Order of carrying out competition:
Competition of instruments takes place in 3 rounds.
Competition of bows takes place in 2 rounds.
ROUND 1
Judges – violin makers perform the general examination of instruments/bows (an assessment: yes/no for participation in the II round). Judges – musicians try and listen to instruments/bows (give points);
ROUND 2
The Jury Panel will assess instruments: the makers will provide professional assessment, musicians will give assessment to instruments in chamber conditions.
The end of bows competition (by results of estimates of first round (musicians), the second round (maker).
Winners will be declared after the end of the third round.
ROUND 3
Instruments, with the highest assessment (the average of all assessments given by the Jury of the both groups) will be admitted to Round 3, but there will be no more than 6 violins, 6 violas, 6 cellos.
The jury in full strength estimates sound qualities of instruments accompanied by an orchestra.
Awards and diplomas are given on the basis of the scores of II and III rounds. After summing up, the jury will open envelopes with mottoes of participants of competition and will declare results.

a) Round 2 and Round 3 listening will be held openly to public;

10.1. Special diplomas are given:
a) For the best sound qualities;
b) For the best art and technical work of the maker;
c) For the best game qualities of a bow;
10.2. State and public organizations, artistic and professional unions, mass media, institutions, firms, private and juridical persons may grant special prizes and awards to participants upon agreement with the Organizing Committee and the Jury.
